Sound power is a suitable approach for benchmarking and compliance test, providing robust and repeatable results. Microflown sensor opens a new approach for sound power measurements on the drivelines or components. The muti-capture module of the Analyser Velo software enables to combine multiple data-sets and link an arbitrary set of measurements to a particular area of devices, machines or structures investigated.

COMMUNICATING IN SOUND POWER

Sound power radiation and sound power ranking of noise sources is a suitable approach for benchmarking and compliance test, providing robust and repeatable results. The Microflown sensor opens a new approach for sound power measurements on the drivelines or components. The sensors enable direct measurements of both sound pressure & particle velocity, thus the sound intensity can be intuitively obtained by taking the cross spectrum between both; allowing sound intensity and sound power measurements across a broad frequency range. Furthermore the sensors are hardly affected by the environment, allowing measurements in situations with a high sound pressure over sound intensity ratio (p/I index) making it possible to measure directly at the test bench. PU sensors are offering companies a viable solution to have the testing capabilities in house. Having quantitative measurement results make it that sound power can be considered as a very good “communication tool” between different parties e.g. OEM’s and Suppliers.

The electrification of vehicle propulsion has caused a radical change, also in the world of acoustics. Although electric vehicles are almost always considerably quieter, the interior noise is marked by high-frequent noise which can be subjectively perceived as annoying and unpleasant. Disturbing sounds are no longer masked by combustion engine noise. This results to an increased focus and demand on airborne noise measurements for electrical vehicles and drivelines. The sound power, or more specific sound power per order(s), is rapidly becoming a standard requirement and used for target setting in the development of electric drivelines. Obtaining sound power, especially for run-ups, is a comprehensive and challenging task.


The driveline is typically mounted on a test bench placed in a normal room, which is acoustically speaking a challenging environment. Traditionally the measurement procedure involved a rather large pressure based sound intensity probe scanned across a surface resulting in a limitation to stationary conditions. With small PU intensity probes it is easy to apply an array of multiple sensors around the e.g. a driveline, and capture the whole object in one measurement. All signals are acquired simultaneously; enabling measurements of sound power on run-ups. Furthermore, the method gives automotive developers a universal language to communicate in: Sound Power per Order.

Intuitive workflow

The Analyser is designed as a flexible framework offering a workflow in the form of a charts. This results in an intuitive guidance for users through your measurement campaigns. In combination with the order analysis submodule, the RPM and Orders can be used to synchronize the multiple captures. This allows you for example to measure a complete electric vehicle driveline and see the overall Sound Power per order or for selected order ranges.The possibility to create measurement templates speeds up the working procedure and furthermore offering a platform that ensures robust data for repeatable measurement campaigns such as sound power. Furhtemore Sound Power Ranking table can be generated. The tables provides you detailed insight to the contribution of (sub-)components contributing to overal sound power.
